BEDM - May 10th

Ohai there!

My hand is so sore! That Modern Studies exam is 3 and a half hours of vigorous writing altogether, and I know have a blister on and my writing finger AND thumb! Anyhoo, there was nothing in the paper that perplexed me so it was all good... oh! Except one of those stupid common sense questions and a poorly worded question in a questionnaire. (High five for that last sentence?)

I am going to talk about Scottish Independence at last! Huzzah!

Firstly I was very happy with the result of the recent Scottish Parliamentary election, because I'm a newly converted from the LibDem debacle (though, I do concede that the Scottish Liberal Democrats are getting the shit kicked out of them for Westminster's actions for no good reason.) I am in favour of Scottish Independence and this can be split into 3 reasons:
  • Political
  • Cultural
  • Economic
I'm not going to talk about the economics because I'm not clued up enough to have a strong point-of-view.

Culturally Scotland is very different from the rest of the UK. When you talk about a sense of national pride, I see myself as proud to be a Scot and not a Brit. I personally believe that Scottish people are also more popular than the English in the international community, as epitomised by the classic scene:

A bar in Germany.
German: Guten Tag!
Scot: Hi there?
German: So are you British...?
Scot: Scottish.
German: Oh! You are Scottish! Let me buy you a drink friend.

You catch my drift. Because of the traditional Scottish sportsmanship and friendliness, I believe we are more secure as a nation then if we're attached to the rest of ragtag Britain. You might just see this is nationalist propaganda but it's just my perspective.

Now politically I have very strong opinions! First let's talk about parliament. Scotland continues to show an incredibly liberal political status and what are we operating under? A Conservative coalition. Despite the fact we only elected 1 MP. In the whole of the country. I think that was the straw that broke the camels back for me. I also believe that disconnecting ourselves from one of the worlds super powers will make us much more safe. What are the benefits of being a powerhouse country like the US? I suppose more sway in the international community, but is it really worst it for the increased risks of terrorist attacks and all the flack you have to take. I would rather be in a small, respected country (like Holland) than in a powerful much hated country.

I also think the way we've used our devolved powers is excellent. Abolished tuition fees and prescription fees, bus passes. I believe our education system is better. If not independence I believe in more devolved powers to the Scottish Parliament.

Believe it or not, I don't actually feel that strongly about this but those are my thoughts. What are yours?

But never mind that, 'The Apprentice' is on! I can't wait to see the new selection of cunts candidates!

Tara x
