My Top TV Shows (That No One Watches)

Ohai there!

It's no lie to say I like to watch a bit of TV. In fact, a lot of TV. Some would say an unhealthy amount. But who listens to 'some', geez... what a loser.

I would say my love of scripted TV comes from the vast amounts I watched a child instead of having friends (Pfft, who needs friends?) and the fact that I love stories. And what heightens TV over film for me is the much bigger space for character development, and that it's continuous and new things can happen every week. Not to mention the excitement in anticipation!

Sometimes when I watch something really good I want to talk about it. Although, some of the more obscure shows I want to discuss, no one watches. Hence the frustration.

Here is a list of TV shows I adore, that not nearly enough of you watch:

  • Arrested Development
HILARIOUS! An amazing cult sitcom that aired in America almost 10 years ago. It's about a spoiled, vacuous Bluth family and starts when the head gets arrested for embezzlement and selling property to Sadam Hussein! Anyhoo it's up to the middle-son to run the company and hold his family together. The show is told in a documentary style by its narrator and it creates in-jokes with the viewers. It's genuinely amazing. I couldn't find a trailer, so here's the opening titles. But take my word for it. It's awesome!

Best Series: 1, 2 & 3

  • Dexter
Do you love serial killers? Do you love deception, twists and tension? Do you love fucking amazing TV? Then this is the show for you! Starring the legendary Michael C. Hall and an awesome cast of actors, the series follows Dexter Morgan - blood-spatter analyst for the Miami Metro Homocide department who also moonlights as a serial killer. Its episodes are a perfect blend of black humour, superb plotting, and are, most importantly, gripping. Unmissable!

Best Series: 1, 2 & 4

  • United States of Tara
From Showtime, the same network as Dexter is this great 30 minute dramedy starring Toni Collette. It's about a dysfunctional family in the American mid-west, where the mother of the family has Dissociative Identity Disorder (Multiple Personality Disorder.) Her entire personality changes whenever she is in a stressful situation and she turns into many hilarious characters: Alice - a traditional 1950s housewife; T - a rebellious slutty teenager; and Buck - a country yokel who "had his dick blown off in 'Nam" amongst a host of other characters. It's not just about Tara either, it's about her families lives and how they cope (or don't) with her mental illness. Penned by 'Juno' genius Diablo Cody, it's not currently showing in the UK but you can catch it online!

Best Series: 1

  • Being Human
What can be better than a series about a werewolf, a ghost and a vampire living together? Nothing! In my opinion, the best thing on British TV at the moment. It explores what being human is really all about amongst all the cool special effects. It's on BBC 3 just now and you really just have to watch it to see how amazing it is.

Best Series: 1 & 3

  • Six Feet Under
We need to take a trip back to 2000 for this one. Created by Alan Ball, now famous for 'True Blood', this show centers around a family who run a funeral home called "Fisher & Sons". It's a well-known TV classic and when you watch it you should understand why. It begins with the death of matriarch of the family, Nathaniel Fisher which brings his son Nathaniel Jr. back to town where his grieving family await him. They range from Ruth - the trapped housewife, David - the closeted church deacon, Claire - a high-schooler with an identity crisis. These, along with a host of others, are great characters and it's a really thought-provoking series. It also has one of the most shocking episodes in TV history...

Best Series: 1 & 4

My mission for you all is to watch at least one of these shows that you haven't already seen! Enjoy!

Tara x
